Aikido for Kids

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that focuses on self-defense. It is a training that develops flexibility, core strength, confidence, and courage in a playful, safe environment.

Aikido is performed by blending with the attacker, using the force of the attack rather than coming against it. The techniques are completed with many different throws or joint locks which can be combined with different defenses.
This means that it is more about defending and defusing situations than it is about causing harm. Children are taught the most appropriate response to an attack is simply to get out of the way, and then if necessary, to control the attack.

What do the classes look like?
The Saturday morning class will focus on the principles and philosophy of Aikido through games and exercises, and simple techniques suitable for people of all sizes to do together. We’ll also have fun developing ukemi (the art of falling) and nage (receiving, blending with and resolving an attack). We practice basic Aikido techniques, and we also play energetic games that reinforce the principles of aikido.

“The best thing I ever did for my children, was start them in Aikido classes.”

“Experts agree that martial arts is one of the very best ways to help children gain self-discipline, respect and confidence—essential traits for success in school, at home, and in life.”
